Pre-season WCHA favorite Denver, defending Red Baron WCHA Final Five champion Minnesota Duluth and defending MacNaughton Cup champion North Dakota all won on the road in conference play on Friday (Nov. 6) night while Wisconsin defeated visiting Minnesota. As a result, the Pioneers have moved into sole possession of first place in the league race while the Bulldogs and Fighting Sioux share second with Colorado College, just two points back.
University of Denver junior goaltender Marc Cheverie is the Hockey Commissioners' Association National Division I Player of the Month for October. Cheverie posted a 4-0 record with a .959 save percentage and 1.27 goals-against average for the No. 2/3 Pioneers.
As a member in good standing of the WCHA Women's "Big Three", the defending NCAA champion Wisconsin Badgers appeared to have lost their esteemed status with season-opening losses to North Dakota, Bemidji State and Ohio State. Because Minnesota had opened the season with an 8-0 run that included a sweep over arch-rival UMD, it looked like a mismatch when the Gophers came blowing into Madison for a series against the sputtering Badgers.
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced the women's players of the week for Nov. 4-10, 2009. They are St. Cloud State University forward Meaghan Pezon on offense, University of Wisconsin goaltender Becca Ruegsegger on defense, and Ohio State University forward Hokey Langan as rookie.
