BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Feb. 28, 2019 – With the fifth month of the 2018-19 campaign in the books, the men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its WCHA Players of the Month. The honorees for February 2019 are: Northern Michigan senior Adam Rockwood (Forward), Bemidji State senior Justin Baudry (Defenseman), Minnesota State freshman Dryden McKay (Goaltender) and Lake Superior State freshman forward Ashton Calder (Rookie).
Adam Rockwood, Sr., Northern Michigan (Coquitlam, B.C.)
Northern Michigan's Adam Rockwood led the WCHA in points (11), assists (10) and assists per game (1.25) in February. He averaged 1.38 points per game for the month while seven of his league-leading assists came on the power play, which also led the WCHA. The Coquitlam, B.C., native's 10 assists tied for second nationally, while his point total ranked No. 5. He ranked second in the NCAA in power play assists and tied for third in the nation in power play points. Rockwood posted a career high-equaling four assists in Northern Michigan's win over No. 18 Lake Superior State on Feb. 23 to complete a two-game sweep of the Lakers. This is Rockwood's first Player of the Month honor of his career.
Honorable Mention: John Schilling, Sr., Bowling Green (tallied eight points on three goals and five assists in February); Max Humitz, Jr., Lake Superior State (finished the month with seven points on three goals and four assists with two game-winning goals and two power play assists).
Justin Baudry, Sr., Bemidji State (LaBroquerie, Manitoba)
Bemidji State's Justin Baudry led Bemidji State – and all WCHA defensemen – in scoring in February with eight points on three goals and five assists. His three goals included one game-winner and one game-tying score. A vital piece of the Beavers' power play unit, Baudry contributed a power play goal and a pair of man-advantage assists. He was also a member of a BSU penalty kill that snuffed out 18-of-19 attempts to rank fourth nationally for the month. The LaBroquerie, Manitoba native anchored a Bemidji defensive unit that ranked second in the WCHA in goals per game for the month at 1.83. This is Baudry's first WCHA monthly honor.
Honorable Mention: Alec Rauhauser, Jr., Bowling Green (ended the month on a five-game point streak, posting one assist in each game; leads the WCHA with a +20 rating for the season); Collin Saccoman, Jr., Lake Superior State (finished second in the league with 15 blocked shots in February); Philip Beaulieu, Jr., Northern Michigan (recorded a second-straight eight point month with a goal and seven assists for the Wildcats).
Dryden McKay, Fr., Minnesota State (Downers Grove, Ill.)
Minnesota State freshman Dryden McKay led all NCAA goaltenders with 0.98 goals against average for month of February, allowing six goals on 133 shots faced for the WCHA regular season champion Mavericks. The Downers Grove, Ill., native ranked third in the country for the month with .954 save percentage. Named WCHA Goaltender of the Week twice during month of February – following two-game sweeps vs. Alabama-Huntsville (Feb. 1-2) and at Michigan Tech (Feb. 8-9). McKay turned away 23 shots at Alaska on Feb. 22 to help MSU to a MacNaughton Cup-clinching 6-1 victory. He finished the month with a 4-1-1 record. This is McKay's first Player of the Month honor.
Honorable Mention: Nick Kossoff, Sr., Lake Superior State (posted a pair of 30-plus save games while recording two wins in three starts for the Lakers); Atte Tolvanen, Sr., Northern Michigan (finished the month with a WCHA-best 202 saves and a league high-equaling four victories).
Ashton Calder, F, Lake Superior State (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.)
Lake Superior State's Ashton Calder earned WCHA Rookie of the Month honors for the second month in a row in February after garnering seven points on three goals and four assists for the Lakers. The Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., native led all WCHA rookies in points, assists, assists per game (0.67) and points per game (1.17). His points per game average ranked third nationally among freshmen for the month. Two of his three goals came on the power play while one of his helpers was on a game-winning goal.
Honorable Mention: Roni Salmenkangas, G, Ferris State (posted a 1.96 goals against average and a .921 save percentage in February); Brian Halonen, F, Michigan Tech (led all WCHA rookies with four goals in February and was the freshman leader in shots on goal and power play points); Griffin Loughran, F, Northern Michigan (recorded four points on two goals and two assists for the month).
