BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Feb. 5, 2019 – With the fourth month of the 2018-19 campaign in the books, the men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its WCHA Players of the Month. The honorees for January 2019 are: Alabama Huntsville senior Hans Gorowsky (Forward) and junior Kurt Gosselin (Defenseman), Alaska junior Anton Martinsson (Goaltender) and Lake Superior State freshman forward Ashton Calder (Rookie).
Hans Gorowsky, Sr., Alabama Huntsville (Lino Lakes, Minn.)
Alabama Huntsville's Hans Gorowsky led all WCHA forwards with 10 points on a league-high seven goals along with three assists. The seven goals included four on special teams – three power play tallies and one short-handed goal. Gorowsky made his biggest impact of the month in the Chargers' weekend sweep at Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 18-19), tallying four goals and adding one assist to earn his first career WCHA Forward of the Week award.
The Lino Lakes, Minn., native scored at least one goal in four of UAH's eight games in January. His 95 faceoff wins for the month ranked third in the WCHA. This is Gorowsky's first career Player of the Month honor.
Honorable Mention: Max Humitz, Jr., Lake Superior State (recorded eight points on five goals and three assists in six January games for the Lakers, including a pair of two-goal contests); Dallas Gerads, So., Minnesota State (potted six goals and picked up three assists to lead the sixth-ranked Mavericks in scoring in January); Troy Loggins, Sr., Northern Michigan (led the WCHA in short-handed goals in January with two; posted seven points on three goals and five assists For the month).
Kurt Gosselin, Sr., Alabama Huntsville (Brighton, Mich.)
Alabama Huntsville's Kurt Gosselin led the WCHA in assists last month with seven and led all league defensemen in scoring with 10 points. Five of his 10 points – two goals and three assists – came on the power play for the Chargers.
The Brighton, Mich., native was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 21 following a six-point weekend (three goals, three assists) at Alaska Anchorage Jan. 18-19. This is Gosselin's first career Player of the Month award.
Honorable Mention: Steven Ruggiero, Jr., Lake Superior State (tallied five points on one goal and four assists in January with 14 blocked shots and a +5 rating for the Lakers); Philip Beaulieu, Jr., Northern Michigan (finished second in scoring among WCHA blueliners last month with eight points on four goals and four assists).
Anton Martinsson, Jr., Alaska (Klippan, Sweden)
Alaska junior Anton Martinsson backstopped the Nanoks to four wins in their last five January contests, including a win over nationally-ranked Bowling Green on Jan. 18. Martinsson led the WCHA with 202 saves for the month. The Klippan, Sweden, native ranked third in the league in goals against average at 1.59 and was fourth in save percentage at .958.
Martinsson also picked up two assists last month, both on the power play, tying him for first in the country in scoring among Division I netminders. This is Martinsson's first career Player of the Month honor.
Honorable Mention: Eric Dop, So., Bowling Green (finished 3-2 in January with a pair of shutouts, stopping 130-of-139 shots for the Falcons); Justin Kapelmaster, Jr., Ferris State (returned from injury to start the final four games of the month against top-10 competition and stopped 163-of-156 shots while posting one shutout); Nick Kossoff, Sr., Lake Superior State (posted a pair of 30-plus save games while recording three wins for the Lakers in January).
Ashton Calder, F, Lake Superior State (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.)
Lake Superior State's Ashton Calder led all WCHA rookies with a +9 rating in January and tied for first in assists with six to help the Lakers to a 5-2-1 record in January. The +9 also tied for first nationally among freshmen. In addition, the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., native tied for second among league newcomers in points with six.
Calder tallied an assist on LSSU's game-winning goal against Bemidji State on Jan. 25 and posted an assist in six of the Lakers' eight games in January. The freshman also blocked three shots and fired 10 shots on goal. This is Calder's first career Player of the Month honor.
Honorable Mention: Bauer Neudecker, F, Alabama Huntsville (led all WCHA freshmen in scoring with seven points on two goals and five assists); Cooper Zech, D, Ferris State (finished at +8 in four games against a pair of nationally-ranked teams in January); Griffin Loughran, F, Northern Michigan (recorded six points on a goal and five assists for the month to tie for second in scoring among league freshmen).
