BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – March 4, 2019 – Following the final week of the 2018-19 regular season, the men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its Players of the Week. The honorees for games of March 1-2 are Northern Michigan seniors Troy Loggins (Forward) and Atte Tolvanen (Goaltender), Bowling Green junior Alec Rauhauser (Defenseman) and Ferris State Goaltender Roni Salmenkangas (Rookie).
Troy Loggins, Sr., Northern Michigan (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
Northern Michigan's Troy Loggins finished the weekend with five goals to lead the Wildcats to a home-and-home sweep of rival UP rival Michigan Tech. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native recorded his first-ever hat trick in 4-2 effort at Tech on Friday night. On Saturday, he scored the first two goals of the night to help the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory. The sweep catapulted the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the WCHA this season. He leads Northern in scoring and goals scored with 37 points on 22 goals and 15 assists. He shares the WCHA in points and is ranks second in goals. This is Loggins's second-straight WCHA player of the week award.
Honorable Mention: Kylar Hope, Jr., Alaska (recorded one assist and a game-winning goal in the Nanooks' sweep of Alaska Anchorage); John Schilling, Sr., Bowling Green (tallied two goals and one assist in BGSU's split with Alabama Huntsville); Corey Mackin, Sr., Ferris State (potted a game winning goal and reached 100 career points in the final series of his career); Diego Cuglietta, Sr., Lake Superior State (scored three goals in LSSU's series with Ferris State to tie for the NCAA lead at 23); Nick Rivera, Jr., Minnesota State (registered three points on two goals and an assist in the Mavericks' sweep of Bemidji State).
Alec Rauhauser, Jr., Bowling Green (Bismarck, N.D.)
Bowling Green's Alec Rauhauser recorded a three point night in Bowling Green's 7-1 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. Rauhauser scored a power play goal from the blueline to put BGSU up 3-0 over the Chargers in the first period. The Bismarck, N.D., native also tallied assists on Bowling Green's first and sixth goals of the night. Rauhauser has tallied six multi-point games this season, and 18 in his career. He is also +20 on the year, which is the team high. This is Rauhauser's third WCHA player of the week honor this season and his second in a row.
Honorable Mention: Justin Baudry, Sr., Bemidji State (assisted on both of Bemidji State's goals in its series at Minnesota State); Joe Rutkowski, So., Ferris State (recorded a pair of assists in Ferris State's split at Lake Superior State); Collin Saccoman, Jr., Lake Superior State (tied for the WCHA defenseman weekend lead in +/- at +3 and blocked shots with six); Connor Mackey, So., Minnesota State (posted two points on a pair of assists against Bemidji State); James Vermeulen, Sr., Northern Michigan (had two assists in the Wildcats' sweep of Michigan Tech).
Atte Tolvanen, Sr., Northern Michigan (Vihti, Finland)
Northern Michigan's Atte Tolvanen set a school single-game record with 58 saves in Friday's win at Michigan Tech. He followed that up with a 20-save performance Saturday night to shutout the Huskies and complete NMU's two-game sweep. The shutout was the 13th of his career, which is also an NMU record. The Vihti, Finland, native also played in his school record-setting 133rd career game in the series finale. In addition to his success defending the net, he also notched an assist Saturday night. This is Tolvanen's fifth Goaltender of the Week award and his second in a row.
Honorable Mention: Mark Sinclair, So., Alabama Huntsville (guided the Chargers to a playoff berth-clinching victory over Bowling Green on Friday); Anton Martinsson, Jr., Alaska (backstopped the Nanooks to a sweep of Alaska Anchorage with 46 saves in the 3-0 and 2-1 wins); Roni Salmenkangas, Fr., Ferris State (stopped 68 shots in two games at Lake Superior State); Nick Kossoff, Sr., Lake Superior State (made a season-high 45 saves in the Lakers' quarterfinal home ice-clinching win over Ferris State).
Roni Salmenkangas, G, Ferris State (Tampere, Finland)
Ferris State freshman netminder Roni Salmenkangas had another impressive weekend in net for the Bulldogs as FSU earned a league road split at Lake Superior State to close out the campaign. For the weekend, the Bulldog rookie tallied 68 saves to go with a 2.53 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. He played 118:41 in net for the Bulldogs and tallied 34 stops in a masterful performance to close the year, which saw him record a .939 save figure over his final six games. He earned the win in FSU's 3-2 triumph on Saturday in the finale. This is Salmenkangas' third Rookie of the Week honor.
Honorable Mention: Alex Semandel, Fr., D, Lake Superior State (collected his first college assist and a game-winning goal in the Lakers' split with Ferris State); Vincent de Mey, Fr., F, Northern Michigan (scored his third career goal in the Wildcats' series-opening win at Michigan Tech on Friday).
