BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – November 23, 2020 – The Men's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its Players of the Week for games of Nov. 21-22. The Alabama Huntsville trio of junior Tyr Thompson (Forward), junior Dayne Finnson (Defenseman) and freshman forward Tyrone Bronte (Rookie) earn this week's accolades alongside Lake Superior State senior Mareks Mitens (Goaltender).
Tyr Thompson, Jr., Alabama Huntsville (Sherwood Park, Alta.)
Alabama Huntsville's Tyr Thompson was the only Charger to tally two goals and one assist during the weekend series at Robert Morris, tying for the team lead in points with three over the course of the series. One of his two goals came on the power play, and he had a +1 rating on the ice. The junior forward notched his first career multi-point performances on Sunday when he recorded a goal and an assist.
Honorable Mention: Max Johnson, Sr., Bowling Green: Scored two goals in Bowling Green's 5-0 win over Adrian. Ashton Calder, Jr., Lake Superior State: Scored the shootout-winning goal in Lake State's 0-0 tie against the Huskies and followed with a two-point effort in Sunday's 4-1 win. Reggie Lutz, Sr., Minnesota State: Scored twice in Minnesota State's season-opening win at Bemidji State.
Dayne Finnson, Jr., Alabama Huntsville (Arborg, Man.)
Junior Dayne Finnson paced all Chargers defensemen with two points on one goal and one assist during the weekend series against Robert Morris. Both his points came on the man-advantage. The Arborg, Man., native scored his first goal of the season on the power play during Sunday's game after notching the first assist on UAH's opening goal of the weekend while on the man advantage Saturday.
Honorable Mention: Will Cullen, Jr., Bowling Green: Logged his first point of the season via assist for the Falcons in the 5-0 win over Adrian on Nov. 21. Andy Carroll, Jr., Minnesota State: Scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's season-opening 5-0 win at Bemidji State.
Mareks Mitens, Sr., Lake Superior State (Ventspils, Latvia)
Lake Superior State's Mareks Mitens backstopped the Lakers in the team's first weekend of play. Mitens totaled 105:00 minutes in the LSSU net this weekend as he stopped all 28 shots he faced in the 0-0 tie on Saturday evening against Michigan Tech to earn his sixth career shutout. Mitens followed up with 13 saves in the game against the Huskies on Sunday as he played the first two periods for the Lakers. The Ventspils, Latvia native stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced in his five periods of play. Mitens finished the weekend with a .976 save percentage and a 0.57 goals against average.
Honorable Mention: Zack Rose, So., G, Bowling Green: Tallied 16 saves in the contest to register his first career shutout. Dryden McKay, Jr., Minnesota State: Stopped all 21 shots he faced in backstopping Minnesota State to a 5-0 win at Bemidji State in season-opening action Sunday.
Tyrone Bronte, Fr., F, Alabama Huntsville (Melbourne, Australia)
Freshman forward Tyrone Bronte led all UAH players in assists on the weekend with three helpers, tying for the team lead in points with three. The Melbourne, Australia, native also tied for the team lead with a +2 rating on the ice in his first collegiate series. Bronte posted two assists in Sunday's 4-3 loss for the first multi-assist game by a Charger this season.
Honorable Mention: Jake Livingstone, Fr., D, Minnesota State: Scored his first career goal in Minnesota State's season-opening victory over Bemidji State on Sunday.
