BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – December 3, 2020 – The Men's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its Players of the Month for November. The Lake Superior State trio of junior Ashton Calder (Forward), senior Will Riedell (Defenseman) and senior Mareks Mitens (Goaltender) are joined by Alabama Huntsville freshman forward Tyrone Bronte (Rookie) as this month's honorees.
Ashton Calder, Jr., Lake Superior State (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.)
Lake Superior State's Ashton Calder led all WCHA players in points during the month of November with five in four games. Calder ranked second among WCHA players in goals with three. The junior forward was tied for first among all NCAA players in game-winning goals with two in the Laker's two most recent contests. Calder, an alternate captain, is currently riding a three-game point streak (3g-2a) which includes two multi-point efforts. The only game Calder has yet to record a point in was a 0-0 tie against Michigan Tech on Nov. 21, but the junior did score the deciding goal in the overtime shootout to give the Lakers the advantage in that contest. The Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., native led the team with a +5 rating in the month of November, which is tied for first among all NCAA skaters. This is Calder's third career WCHA monthly honor.
Honorable Mention: Max Johnson, Sr., Bowling Green: Recorded four goals in the Falcons' first two games in 2020-21 to surpass the 100-point mark for his career (102). Tyr Thompson, Jr., Alabama Huntsville: Tied for the UAH lead in points with three at Robert Morris on Nov. 20-21 with two goals and an assist, with one goal coming on the power play.
Will Riedell, Sr., Lake Superior State (Greensboro, N.C.)
Lake Superior State's Will Riedell led all WCHA defensemen in points during the month of November with a goal and two assists for three points in four games. His three points tied for second among NCAA defensemen for the month. Among WCHA blueliners, Riedell was tied for first in both goals (one) and assists (two) while also ranking second in plus/minus (+4). The alternate captain finished the month tied for second among WCHA players in blocked shots with five. The Greensboro, N.C. native assisted on the game-winning goal in the Lakers 4-1 win over Michigan Tech on Nov. 22 and recorded his first multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist against Adrian College on Nov. 27. This is Riedell's second WCHA monthly honor.
Honorable Mention: T.J. Lloyd, So., Bowling Green: Logged two assists and four shots on goal for the Falcons in November. Dayne Finnson, Jr., Alabama Huntsville: Lead all Charger defensemen in scoring with a goal and an assist in UAH's season-opening series at Robert Morris, with the tally coming on the power play.
Mareks Mitens, Sr., Lake Superior State (Ventspils, Latvia)
Lake Superior State's Mareks Mitens started all four games for LSSU, which ranked first in the WCHA and tied for third among all NCAA goalies. Mitens allowed five goals over the course of four games for the Lakers, posting a 2-0-1 record which included his sixth career shutout on Nov. 21 in a 0-0 tie against Michigan Tech. Among WCHA netminders, the senior ranked first in minutes played (204:33), first in saves (77), shots faced (82) and wins (two), and tied for first in shutouts (one). The Ventspils, Latvia native finished the month in fourth place in goals against average (1.47) and tied for third place in save percentage (.939) among NCAA goaltenders who appeared in four or more games during the month. This is Mitens' first WCHA monthly honor.
Honorable Mention: Zack Rose, So., G, Bowling Green: Recorded his first career shutout in his season debut on Nov. 21, turning away 16 shots in a 5-0 Falcon win over Adrian.
Tyrone Bronte, Fr., F, Alabama Huntsville (Melbourne, Australia)
Freshman forward Tyrone Bronte led all UAH players in assists with three helpers in November, which tied him for the team lead in points with three. The Melbourne, Australia native also tied for the team lead with a +2 rating on the ice in his debut month with the Chargers. Bronte posted two assists in UAH's 4-3 loss at Robert Morris on Nov. 22 for the first multi-assist game by a Charger this season.
Honorable Mention: Jeremy Geravis, Fr., D, Lake Superior State: One of only six rookie defensemen to record multiple points during the month of November.
