BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Jan. 4, 2021 – The Men's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to recognize four student-athletes as its Players of the Week, presented by Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup, for the games of Jan. 2-3. Bowling Green senior Cameron Wright (Forward) and junior Will Cullen (Defenseman) and Minnesota State junior Dryden McKay (Goaltender) and freshman Akito Hirose (Rookie) took home this week's honors.
Cameron Wright, Sr., Bowling Green (Newmarket, Ont.)
Bowling Green senior forward Cameron Wright totaled four points in the Falcons' three wins over Robert Morris and Ferris State. The Newmarket, Ont., native's first points came on Saturday against Ferris State when he tallied three points on two goals (including the game-winner) and a power play assist. Sunday, Wright potted his third goal of the weekend against FSU, logging his second consecutive game-winner on a third period breakaway score. This is Wright's fourth WCHA weekly honor and his second this season.
Honorable Mention: Brendan Harris, Sr., Bemidji State: Posted the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career Saturday, which included the game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory. He leads the team in goals scored (four) and points (six) through seven games. Ethan Stewart, Jr., Ferris State: Had two goals and two assists for a team-leading four points on the weekend. Tallied the lone goal vs. then-No. 7/7 Bowling Green on Saturday. Added three points in close setback to Northern Michigan with goal and two assists. Cade Borchardt, So., Minnesota State: Notched a goal and an assist in then-No. 5/5 Minnesota State's 5-0 win at Northern Michigan Saturday. Scored first career game-winning goal in Sunday's win over the Wildcats.
Will Cullen, Jr., Bowling Green (Pelham Manor, N.Y.)
Bowling Green junior defenseman Will Cullen logged four points over the last week for the Falcons in three wins over Robert Morris and Ferris State. Cullen began the week against RMU by logging the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the Falcons after also assisting on the game-tying goal for a multiple-point effort. The Pelham Manor, N.Y., native contributed a pair of assists in Saturday's series opener with Ferris State, including one on the power play. This is Cullen's second WCHA weekly honor.
Honorable Mention: Tyler Rockwell, Sr., Michigan Tech: Recorded three points on two goals and an assist in Tech's home sweep of Alabama Huntsville. Akito Hirose, Fr., Minnesota State: Posted +5 rating and tallied a goal and three assists in helping No. 5/5 Minnesota State to a two-game league road sweep at Northern Michigan.
Dryden McKay, Jr., Minnesota State (Downers Grove, Ill.)
Minnesota State junior Dryden McKay recorded back-to-back shutouts in backstopping then-No. 5/5 Minnesota State to 5-0 and 4-0 wins at Northern Michigan last weekend. The Downers Grove, Ill., native stopped all 37 shots fired on net by the Wildcats in the two-game set to give him four shutouts in six outings this season. His 18 career shutouts stand tied for seventh on NCAA's all-time list and rank second in WCHA history. This is McKay's 15th career WCHA weekly honor.
Honorable Mention: Zach Driscoll, Sr., Bemidji State: Tied for the WCHA lead in saves with 58 stops as the Beavers picked up a win and a tie in their non-conference series with Lake Superior State. Eric Dop, Sr., Bowling Green: Stopped a season-high 35-of-36 shots in Bowling Green's 6-1 win at Ferris State to run his season record to 6-0-0. Blake Pietila, So., Michigan Tech: Stopped 18-of-18 shots in Michigan Tech's 4-0 win over Alabama Huntsville to pick up his second shutout of the season on Saturday
Akito Hirose, Fr., D, Minnesota State (Calgary, Alta.)
Minnesota State defenseman Akito Hirose recorded a +5 rating in helping then-No. 5/5 Minnesota State to a two-game league road sweep at Northern Michigan. The Calgary, Alta., native had two assists in Saturday's 5-0 win and contributed a goal and an assist in Sunday's 4-0 victory to up his season scoring line to seven points on a goal and six assists. This is Hirose's second WCHA weekly honor in as many weeks.
Honorable Mention: Lukas Sillinger, Fr., F, Bemidji State: Finished tied for third in scoring among WCHA rookies with two points on two assists as the Beavers picked up a non-conference win and tie at Lake Superior State. Anton Malmstrom, Fr., D, Bowling Green: Recorded his first two collegiate points with a pair of assists against Ferris State. Mitch Deelstra, Fr., F, Ferris State: Had team-high 10 shots on the week in three games with both a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs. Nick Nardella, Fr., F, Michigan Tech: Picked up his first collegiate points against Alabama Huntsville with a goal and an assist Saturday.
