Red Baron® WCHA
Offensive Player of the Week

Eriah Hayes - Junior, Forward
Minnesota State University

photoMinnesota State University forward Eriah Hayes, who produced his first collegiate hat trick and four scoring points as the Mavericks split a two-game conference series with visiting Nebraska Omaha last weekend, has been named the Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Jan. 24.

A 6-4, 210-pound junior right winger from La Crescent, Minn., Hayes accounted for three goals and one assist as MSU and UNO played a pair of one-goal overtime games on Jan. 20-21 at Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato. Last Friday night, Hayes assisted on teammate J.P. Lafontaine's power-play goal at 8:10 of the third period to send the game into overtime, which MSU eventually lost, 2-1. Then, in Saturday's rematch, Hayes came back to score the host Mavericks' first, third and fourth goals in registering his first career hat trick. He scored a power-play goal at 16:55 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1, tallied an even-strength goal at 9:09 of the third period to tie the game at 3-3, and then gave his club a 4-3 advantage with his third goal of the game at 17:46 of the third. Minnesota State then won the game in overtime by a 5-4 margin.

In addition to his four points, Hayes had seven shots on goal in the series and earned a +1 plus/minus rating. He currently ranks second on the MSU team with 10 goals and is tied for second on the team scoring charts with 18 points and six power-play goals.

Defensive Player of the Week

Justin Schultz - Senior, Defenseman
University of Wisconsin

photoUniversity of Wisconsin All-American defenseman Justin Schultz, who earned a +7 plus/minus rating and contributed five scoring points to help the host Badgers to a two-game conference sweep over Alaska Anchorage last weekend, is the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for Jan. 24. This marks the second time this season Schultz has earned the weekly honor (also on Nov. 29).

A 6-2, 185-pound junior from West Kelowna, B.C., Schultz scored once and set up four others in the Jan. 20-21 series, drawing assists on both game-winning goals. A draft choice of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks, he is the nation's top-scoring defenseman this season with 37 points (12g, 25a), averaging 1.54 points per game. He has also moved into ninth place on UW's all-time point-scoring list for defensemen with 106 in 108 games played and is tied for third place on the all-time goal-scoring list for defensemen with 36, six off the UW record.

In a 4-0 Wisconsin victory over the Seawolves last Friday, Schultz was on the ice for all four Badger goals, setting up the game-winner at 9:04 of the first period, adding an assist on UW's third goal, then scoring his 12th of the season in the third period for a three-point night. Last Saturday, Schultz then added two more assists in a 3-2 victory, including the primary one on the game-winning goal at 15:57 of the third period. He was on the ice for all of Wisconsin's goals on the weekend and none of UAA's tallies.

Rookie of the Week

Andrew Prochno - Freshman, Defenseman
St. Cloud State University

photoSt. Cloud State University defenseman Andrew Prochno, who had four points, five shots on goal, two blocks and earned a +2 plus/minus rating in a two-game series with defending league champion North Dakota last weekend, has been named Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week for Jan. 24.

A 5-11, 185-pound freshman from Shorewood, Minn., Prochno helped guided St. Cloud State to a 3-1, 2-3 split in Jan. 20-21 action against No. 17-ranked North Dakota on Jan. 20-21 at the National Hockey Center. In the series opener last Friday, Prochno provided two assists in the Huskies' 3-1 victory, with one coming on Cory Thorson's goal in the second period that tied the game at 1-1 and one on an empty-goal by Jared Festler that iced the game in the closing seconds of the third. Then last Saturday, Prochno posted a goal and an assist as SCSU dropped a 3-2 decision to UND. His fourth goal of the season at 2:50 of the first period tied the game at 1-1 and he then added an assist on David Eddy's goal in the second that closed the gap to 3-2. Prochno also helped the SCSU penalty-kill go a perfect 4-of-4 in the series.
