The WCHA Playoff get underway next weekend on campus sites

MADISON, Wis. – The first round of the men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs, consisting of six best-of-three series and scheduled for Friday, March 9, Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 (if necessary), are now set.

WCHA regular season/MacNaughton Cup champion and No. 1 seed Minnesota (24-12-1) will host No. 12 Alaska Anchorage (9-23-2) at Mariucci Arena, No. 2 Minnesota Duluth (22-8-6) will entertain No. 11 Minnesota State (12-22-2) at AMSOIL Arena, No. 3 Denver (21-11-4) will take on visiting No. 10 Wisconsin (16-16-2) at Magness Arena, No. 4 North Dakota (20-12-3) will host No. 9 Bemidji State (17-16-3) at Ralph Engelstad Arena, No. 5 Colorado College (18-14-2) will take on visiting No. 8 Michigan Tech (14-18-4) at Colorado Springs World Arena, and No. 6 St. Cloud State (15-16-5) hosts No. 7 Nebraska Omaha (14-16-6) at the National Hockey Center.

The results on the final day of the regular season (Saturday, March 3) saw host UM defeat UW, 2-1 to clinch the WCHA championship outright, visiting DU down UNO, 3-2 (ot), host SCSU tie UMD, 3-3 (ot) to earn the sixth home playoff berth, UND shut out visiting MSU, 3-0, host CC blank MTU, 2-0, and visiting BSU win at UAA, 5-4.

Following the first round of playoffs, the six winners will be re-seeded No. 1 thru No. 6 according to their regular season finish and move on to the 2012 Red Baron™ WCHA Final Five, set for Thursday, March 15 thru Saturday, March 17 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The Final Five winner receives the Broadmoor Trophy and the WCHA's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
