Moment #5: WCHA is Live on ASN
The 2015-16 season saw a new broadcast entity emerge on the landscape – one that is actively looking to shine a national spotlight on the sport of college hockey – in the American Sports Network (ASN). The sports division of the Sinclair Broadcast Group (the largest television station operator in the United States), ASN debuted its Friday night college hockey package in 2015-16. The inaugural season featured games from five of the six NCAA Division I hockey conferences: Big Ten, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East, National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and the WCHA.
The WCHA had a pair of games shown on 100+ ASN affiliates nationwide, including MASN's Dish Network and Direct TV stations: Alaska at Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 8 and Lake Superior State at Michigan Tech on Friday, Feb. 5. The Lakers-Huskies tilt, part of the Winter Carnival in Houghton, was also shown across Canada on TSN5.
ASN is continuing to expand its college hockey coverage, launching "College Hockey Now," which will air on Thursdays in selected markets on its new, 24/7 network.
"Our agreement with American Sports Network represents an important step for the WCHA and is an exciting development for our fans, who now have more opportunities and greater access to watch tremendous college hockey," said WCHA Commissioner Bill Robertson when the partnership was announced in September 2015. "We applaud ASN's commitment to growing television exposure for our sport and are thrilled to collaborate in showcasing the tremendous student-athletes, programs and member institutions of the WCHA."
