Offensive Player of the Week

photoUniversity of Minnesota Duluth center iceman Travis Oleksuk, who collected four points over the weekend while leading the host and unbeaten Bulldogs to a two-game conference sweep over Alaska Anchorage, is the Red Baron WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 26, 2010. UMD has launched the 2010-11 season with a 5-0-1 unbeaten streak.

A 6-0, 200-pound junior from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Oleksuk scored twice and helped set up one other goal in last Saturday's (Oct. 23) 6-0 triumph over the visiting Seawolves, after picking up an assist on the overtime game-winner the night before as the Bulldogs prevailed 3-2 in the extra session. One of his two scores last Saturday was a shorthander while his first of the evening turned out to be his NCAA Div. 1-leading third game-winner of the year. He also finished a +4 on the plus/minus in the two games and had five shots on goal.

Through six games this season, Oleksuk has produced nine scoring points with four goals and five assists and has 38 points (14g, 24a) and 57 collegiate games with the Bulldogs.

Defensive Player of the Week

photoDefenseman John Lee, whose strong play at both ends of the ice helped host University of Denver to a 4-2 victory and 2-2 overtime tie last weekend in a league series against Wisconsin, is the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 26, 2010.

A 6-1, 180-pound junior from Moorhead, Minn., and a draftee of the NHL's Florida Panthers, Lee earned a +2 plus/minus series rating, delivered six hits from his blueline position, had four blocked shots, fired four shots on goal and also had an assist on a game-winning goal. Lee was named the No. 3 star of the game last Friday night (Oct. 22), with his game-winning assist coming on teammate Jason Zucker's goal at 6:43 of the third period.

A veteran of 86 collegiate games with the DU Pioneers, Lee has 18 career scoring points with two goals and 16 assists.

Rookie of the Week

Sam Brittain - Fr., G

photoGoaltender Sam Brittain, who backstopped the University of Denver Pioneers to a victory and overtime tie against visiting Wisconsin last weekend, has been named the Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week for Oct. 26, 2010.

A 6-3, 210-pound freshman from Calgary, Alberta, Brittain led Denver to a 4-2 win and 2-2 overtime tie against Western Collegiate Hockey Association-rival Wisconsin on Oct. 22-23. He stopped 51 of 55 shots in the two-game series for a .927 saves percentage and allowed only two even-strength goals. He had 26 saves in the Pioneers' 4-2 win and 25 stops in the 2-2 tie. He also Denver to a 9-for-11 effort on the penalty-kill in the two games.

On the 2010-11 season, the Florida (NHL) draftee leads Denver with a 1-1-2 record, a 1.70 goals-against average and a .970 saves percentage in four games and 247:36 minutes of action.
