DENVER - Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) scored one goal and assisted on the game-winning goal in Denver's 3-1 win over Bemidji State in college hockey action tonight at Magness Arena.
Denver's record moves to 7-4-2, 6-2-1 WCHA with its third consecutive win. Bemidji State falls to 2-6-1, 2-6-1.
Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) added goals and Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) made 14 saves in the win.
"It certainly wasn't our best performance, but we'll take the win considering the team had a long week with finals," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Matt Donovan made some big plays for us and Brittain was outstanding in net."
After Sam Rendle staked Bemidji State to an early 1-0 lead, Donovan slid home the equalizer at 16:29 of the first off a drop pass from David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.). Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) earned the second assist.
Zucker redirected a Donovan blast from inside the blueline to give DU a 2-1 lead after two periods. Drew Shore (Denver) earned the second assist.
Salazar iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:33 of the final stanza. Zucker and Drew Shore earned assists on Salazar's eighth goal of the season.
Denver outshot Bemidji State 29-15. Both teams were held scoreless on the power play.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
Notes: Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.) returned to the lineup for the first time since March 27, 2009. Jackson missed last season with a broken right leg and the first 12 games of this season with mono. John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) missed his second straight game with a broken left hand.
