Freshman forward Nick Shore posts goal and assist for Pioneers

Anthony Maiani scored the game-winner for Denver

DENVER - Senior Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal as No. 13/14 Denver grinded out a hard-fought 4-2 win tonight at Magness Arena.

Denver wins its fourth straight game and improves to 8-4-2 overall, 7-2-1 WCHA. Bemidji State falls to 2-7-1, 2-7-1.

Maiani tapped in a rebound off a hard shot by Nick Shore (Denver) at 7:10 of the third period as the Pioneers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to post their second consecutive two-game series sweep.

David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.), Nick Shore and Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) added goals for Denver, who received 20 saves from goaltender Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta).

Makowski staked DU to an early 1-0 lead with a power-play goal from Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and Drew Shore (Denver) at 4:59, but the Pioneers broke down at the end of the first period by allowing goals to Sam Rendle (extra man) at 17:47 and Ian Lowe (power play) at 18:36.

Shore slapped in a rebound off a blast by Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) at 18:37 of the second. Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) earned the second assist on the game-tying goal.

After Maiani's goal, Zucker iced the win with an 85-foot empty-net goal at 19:16 of the final stanza. Makowski tallied the lone assist on Zucker's ninth goal.

Mathieu Dugas made 19 saves in the loss for Bemidji State.

Nick Shore, Makowski and Bennett recorded two-point efforts in the win.

Denver outshot Bemidji State, 23-22, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. The Beavers were 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Pioneers host Air Force, Clarkson and Lake Superior State during the Denver Cup Classic on Nov. 26-27.
