HOUGHTON, Mich. - Jordan George scored with 1:33 remaining to lift Bemidji State to a 1-0 win over the Michigan Tech hockey team Saturday (Feb. 12). BSU was named Winter Carnival champs with the win after the two teams tied 2-2 the previous night.
"I thought we were solid defensively," said head coach Jamie Russell. "We had some good chances offensively."
George blocked a shot from the point by the Huskies which created a break-away opportunity for the sophomore forward. He used a high back-handed shot to beat Tech goalie Kevin Genoe for his 13th goal of the season. His game-winning goal earned him Winter Carnival MVP honors.
Tech's best scoring chance of the game came a minute prior to Bemidji's goal when Evan Witt fired a shot off the crossbar.
Dan Bakala made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season and the sixth of his career.
Genoe made 31 saves for the Huskies.
"I thought Kevin played spectacular tonight," said Russell.
Neither team scored on the power play for the second straight night with the Huskies finishing 0-3 and the Beavers 0-2.
Tech will hit the road for a pair of WCHA games at Denver Feb. 18-19.
