OMAHA, Neb. - Matt Read scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give Bemidji State a 3-2 win over the UNO hockey team on Saturday night at the Qwest Center. The win gave the Beavers three of four points in the weekend series with the Mavericks.
UNO is now winless in its last four games (0-3-1), its longest winless stretch of the season. They are 12-8-2 overall and 9-5-2 in the WCHA while the Beavers improve to 9-11-2 and 5-9-2 in the league. They finished the season series with a record of 3-0-1 against the Mavs.
The winning goal came on a rush up ice. Ian Lowe fired the puck from the right wing. John Faulkner made the save but the puck bounced to Read who fired in his 14th goal of the year.
The game got to overtime because of great work by UNO's Ryan Walters early in the third. He slipped a backhander by screened goaltender Dan Bakala to make it 2-2.
UNO appeared to have taken the lead in the first five minutes of the game when Matt Ambroz rang the post with a shot that cause the puck to trickle across the goal line. After a lengthy video review, the referees waved off the goal.
Undeterred, Ambroz would finally strike on the power play. Eric Olimb got loose for a shot from the low slot. He hit the right post but the puck bounced to Ambroz who fired home his career-best 13th goal of the year.
The Beavers tied the game on a power play midway through the second period. Read knocked in a pass from Emil Billberg for his first goal of the game.
Just 2:56 later, the Beavers earned the lead when defenseman Matt Carlson fired the puck past a screen Faulkner to make it 2-1 after two.
Faulkner finished the game with 28 saves while Bakala had 36.
The Mavericks return to the road next week when they visit the North Dakota Fighting Sioux for games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 and 22.
