MICHIGAN TECH FALLS TO MICHIGAN STATE, 5-3, IN GLI CONSOLATION

Aaron Pietila scored two goals for the Huskies

DETROIT - The Michigan Tech hockey team finished fourth at the 46th Great Lakes Invitational after falling to Michigan State 5-3 Thursday (Dec. 30). Aaron Pietila scored two goals and Dennis Rix added three assists to lead the Huskies.

Kevin Walrod put the Spartans on the board first after redirecting a shot from the blue line by Matt Crandell. Anthony Hayes also assisted on the goal at 13:42 of the first period.

Pietila scored his first goal of the game at 17:22 to tie the score at 1-1. Rix passed to Pietila who scored on the doorstep for his second career goal.

MSU regained the lead with a goal at 2:39 of the second period, but Jacob Johnstone answered with a goal for the Huskies at 5:14. Johnstone took a diving hack at the puck from the side of the goal for his fourth goal of the season.

Brett Perlini scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 16:35 to give MSU a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Dustin Gazley extended the Spartan lead to 4-2 with a goal at 5:13, before Pietila closed the deficit to one with his second goal of the game at 7:51. His second goal mirrored his first scoring from the doorstep thanks to a pass from Rix.

Kevin Walrod completed the scoring for MSU with a goal at 7:51.

Both teams finished 0-3 on the power play.

Michigan Tech will return to action Jan. 7-8 with a pair of WCHA games at St. Cloud State.
