OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO hockey team earned its 10th win of the year, beating Michigan Tech, 5-2 on Thursday night at Qwest Center Omaha. Joey Martin led the assault with a goal and two assists.
The Mavericks are now 10-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the WCHA. The Huskies dropped their ninth straight game and fell to 3-9-2 and 1-9-1 in league play.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, Michigan Tech's Milos Gordic tightened the game when he scored a powerplay goal at 7:33.
UNO responded with a powerplay goal of its own when Eric Olimb scored his first goal of the year, firing home a shot from the top of the slot off an assist from Martin.
Martin closed the scoring when he poked a loose puck through the pads of goalie Josh Robinson to cap the three-point night.
The Mavericks opened the scoring 1:05 into the second period when Matt Ambroz shoveled home his eighth goal of the season from the high slot.
Michigan Tech responded later in the period when Pete Heinonen notched his first goal on the long rebound of a shot by Patrick McCadden.
UNO restored its lead 2:40 later when Matt White banged home the rebound of a shot by Brock Montpetit.
Just 1:32 later, the Mavericks got an odd-man rush, and Jordan Willert wired home his first goal of the season to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes.
John Faulkner stopped 17 to earn the win while Robinson made 48 saves as the Mavericks outshot the Huskies, 53-19.
The two teams conclude the series on Friday night at 7:37 p.m.
