OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO Mavericks erupted for three goals in the third period to pull away from Alaska Anchorage, 4-1, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams. Matt White had a goal and an assist to lead UNO's offense.
The Mavericks ended a three-game losing streak and avenged a loss to the Seawolves last weekend to improve to 2-3-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the WCHA. The two teams finish the weekend series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
UNO held a 1-0 lead for more than two periods before finally getting some breathing room. White carried the puck into the zone, drew the defense to him and then slid the puck to Terry Broadhurst who lifted a shot past goalie Rob Gunderson to make it 2-0. It was Broadhurst's team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Just 43 seconds later, the Mavs made it 3-0. Brock Montpetit created a turnover at center ice and fed Zahn Raubenheimer who wired home a shot from the right wing for his first goal of the year.
White scored into an empty net while the Mavs were shorthanded as the Seawolves tried to get on the board. They finally did when Mickey Spencer slid home a sharp-angle shot for his fifth goal of the year to make it 4-1.
The Mavericks opened the scoring just 2:05 into the first period. Johnnie Searfoss carried the puck deep into the zone and dumped the puck back to Andrej Sustr. The big defenseman fired a slapshot under Gunderson for his first goal of the season.
Faulkner earned his second win of the year with 18 saves while Gunderson made 23 in the loss.
