OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO Mavericks picked up a sweep in their first WCHA series of the season, beating Alaska Anchorage, 3-1, on Saturday night at CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks beat the Seawolves, 4-1, on Friday night and are now 2-0-0 in the league and 3-3-0 overall.
The Seawolves took the early advantage just as the Mavericks had the night before. Off a turnover at the UNO blue line, Mitch Bruijsten got free and cut across the slot. His sharp-angle shot beat John Faulkner at 3:21.
UNO responded less than three minutes later. Terry Broadhurst put a pin-point pass on the stick of Matt White who raced ahead with Alex Hudson on a two-on-one. White beat UAA goalie Chris Kamal with a wrist shot just inside the far post to tie the game.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game just past the halfway mark of the second period. Josh Archibald carried the puck down the right wing and dropped the puck to Andrej Sustr who fired home a shot just inside the near post for his second goal in as many games. UNO led 2-1 after two.
UNO got insurance midway through the third. Ryan Walters chased down a loose puck in the UAA zone and fired a pass to the net. Jayson Megna fought off a defender and poked home the puck for his first collegiate goal.
Faulkner was solid again in goal, stopping 20 shots to improve to 3-2-0. Kamal turned aside 37 in the loss. He's now 2-1-0.
The Mavericks are back on the road next week to play their first WCHA games at Wisconsin. The two schools will face off on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28 and 29 at 7:07 p.m. each night.
