Brock Montpetit scored two goals for the Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. - Brock Montpetit had two goals to help the UNO hockey team to a 4-1 exhibition win over the University of British Columbia on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center. The game was the opener of the season for the Mavericks who begin the regular season next weekend by hosting the Mutual of Omaha Stampede.

Montpetit scored midway through the second period to give the Mavericks some breathing room in a one-goal game. He scored again off a nifty feed from Terry Broadhurst at 7:31 of the third period to give the Mavs a three-goal edge.

Broadhurst finished the game with three assists.

The Mavericks struck late in the first period when Matt White snared a feed from Broadhurst and rifled a shot past UBC goalie Jordan White at 18:46.

It took less than a minute for the Thunderbirds to strike back. While on the power play, Marc Desloges got loose in front and one-timed a shot past John Faulkner to make it 1-1 after one.

UNO retook the lead just 1:24 into the second when Josh Archibald scored off a blind pass from Ryan Walters behind the net.

The Mavericks will open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 7 when they host Mercyhurst in the first round of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. The two teams square off at 7:37 p.m. following the first game between Colgate and Robert Morris at 4:37 p.m.
