Mankato, Minn. - After an opening period that saw both teams score a goal, Minnesota State scored twice in the second period en route to a 4-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over visiting St. Cloud State Friday.
SCSU struck first when Brooks Bertsch a drop pass in the middle of the zone and found the back of the net at 13:31 of the opening frame. MSU responded at 18:59 as sophomore forward J.P Burkemper tipped the puck past Ryan Faragher for his first goal of the season.
MSU freshman defenseman Zach Palmquist got his third goal of the season when his centering pass from the corner went in off a SCSU defenseman's stick at 1:46 of the second period. Junior forward Eli Zuck finished off an odd man rush with with a shot he wired past Faragher for a shorthanded tally at 10:08.
54 seconds into the third period SCSU cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by Cory Thorson. Senior defenseman Cameron Cooper returned the favor at 3:55 with his second goal of the year to close out the scoring.
Cooper finished the game with a goal and an assist and sophomore forward Zach Lerhke chipped in with two assists.
MSU owned a 38-36 advantage in shots on goal in the game and both teams went zero-for-five in power play chances.
The Mavericks, now 3-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in WCHA action, have won their last two games. St. Cloud State drops to 4-5-2 overall, 2-2-1 WCHA.
MSU and SCSU complete the two-game league series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled at Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
