Canton, N.Y. --- Minnesota State got goals from three different players in skating to a 3-1 win over St. Lawrence in a nonconference men's hockey contest in Canton, N.Y., Saturday.
After a scoreless opening period in which the Saints held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, MSU finally broke the seal with freshman defenseman Zach Palmquist's shot from the point finding the back of the net with the Mavericks on the power play at 19:42 of the second period.
St. Lawrence tied the game at 6:56 of the third on a wicked wrist shot from about 15 feet out off of the stick of Greg Carey, but senior forward Justin Jokinen responded at 15:51 when he snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Robby Moss, allowing the Mavericks to regain the lead. The goal is Jokinen's third of the season and the second game-winning goal of his four-year career. Senior forward Adam Mueller closed out the scoring with an empty net tally at 19:59.
Senior goaltender Phil Cook was stellar for the Mavericks, stopping 29 shots in getting his first win since Feb. 4, 2011 in a 2-1 home win over Bemidji State.
MSU freshman forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine, who was scoreless in the game, saw his scoring streak end at eight games.
MSU held St. Lawrence scoreless in five power play chances on the night. MSU was successful on one-of-six power play opportunities.
Now 6-15-1 overall on the year, the Mavericks resume Western Collegiate Hockey Association action with a home series with the University of Wisconsin scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
