ANCHORAGE - Alaska Fairbanks claimed the 2013 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup with a 3-1 win over host Alaska Anchorage Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena. The victory gave the Nanooks a 2-0 sweep of the Governor's Cup series.
UAF, winners of four straight Cup titles, improved to 16-14-4 overall. UAA is now 4-21-7 on the season. Fairbanks leads the overall Governor's Cup competition, 12-8.
The Nanooks broke out on top, 2-0, after one period. UAF's Colton Beck scored just nine seconds in, while Andy Taranto scored with just three seconds left in the first period.
UAF went up 3-0 at 5:49 of the second as Taranto scored off a rebound right out in front.
The Seawolves got on the board just 37 seconds later when Bobby Murphy's blast front the left point found net just inside the right top corner. Hayden Trupp was credited with an assist on the play.
Shots on goal were 19 apiece. Fairbanks' netminder John Keeney was credited with 18 saves on the night in picking up the win. The Seawolves' Chris Kamal had 16 saves for UAA.
UAF was 0-for-2 on the power play while UAA went 0-for-4.
The Seawolves will finish up WCHA regular-season play next weekend at Denver in a Friday-Sunday series (March 8 & 10). WCHA first-round playoffs are set for March 15-17.
