Storrs, Conn. --- Sophomore forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine scored twice as 18th-rated Minnesota State claimed a 3-1 win over Brown in a nonconference men's hockey game played in Storrs, Conn., Saturday.
The game was the opener to the 20th Annual UConn Hockey Classic hosted by the University of Connecticut.
The Mavericks opened the scoring at 14:31 of the first period on a goal from sophomore defenseman Zach Palmquist, whose shot from the point bounced off the glass from behind the net before going in off of the catching glove of Brown netminder Anthony Borelli. Freshman forward Taylor Herndon, who made his collegiate debut in the game, collected his first career point with an assist on Palmquist's goal.
Neither team was able to scoring in the second period and it became a 2-0 Minnesota State lead at 9:02 of the third frame when Lafontaine one-timed a pass from Matt Leitner past Borelli on the glove side for his second power play goal of the year. Brown got on the board at 13:10 with a shorthanded goal by Mark NaClerio, but Lafontaine, with his second goal of the game, sealed the win with an empty-net marker at 19:55. With the two goals in the game, Lafontaine now has racked up 6-11-17 in the last 13 games.
With the win Minnesota State has now won eight of its last nine games
Now 11-6-2 overall on the season, Minnesota State outshot the Bears by a 27-19 margin in the game. The Mavericks finished one-for-two on the power play, while Brown was zero-for-one with the man advantage.
Next action for Minnesota State is tomorrow (Sunday) when the Mavericks play the winner of American International and Connecticut at 7:15 p.m. (EST).
