ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (20-13-1, 17-8-1 WCHA) dropped a tough 5-1 decision to Michigan Tech University (11-17-4, 7-15-4 WCHA) on Saturday, March 2 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
MTU gained control of the match early in the game with a goal by Tanner Kero at :28 of the first period. The goals kept rolling in for MTU as it gained a 2-0 lead at 3:51 of the first period with a marker by Jujhar Khaira. To complete the first period, MTU made it 3-0 with a goal at 4:23 by Riley Sweeney.
In the second period, MTU padded its lead to 4-0 with a goal by David Johnstone at 13:03. The Huskies from the UP completed their scoring at 8:28 of the third period with a goal by Alex Petan.
St. Cloud State broke the shutout late in the contest with a goal by Jimmy Murray at 17:16, which made the final tally 5-1.
In the contest, SCSU outshot MTU 37-27 as Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record for SCSU with 14 saves and four goals allowed. Rasmus Reijola completed the game for SCSU with eight saves and one goal allowed. Jamie Phillips charted 36 saves in the contest for MTU.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-7 and MTU was 0-of-2.
The Huskies will continue their WCHA season on March 8-9 with a pair of road games at Wisconsin. Both of these games will be played at the Veteran's Arena in Madison since the Kohl Center will be hosting a basketball tournament that weekend in Madison.
