HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Bowling Green on Saturday in WCHA action at the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center. UAH slips to 1-21 (1-13 WCHA) with the setback, while BGSU improves to 11-9-4 (8-6-2 WCHA).
For the first time this season, the Chargers outshot their opponent as the team registered 27 shots to 26 for the Falcons.
One of those 27 attempts resulted in a goal for UAH as Stephen McKenna recorded his second goal of the season to close out the scoring in the contest when he scored at 16:10 of the second period on a play that was assisted by Steven Koshey and Craig Pierce.
The helpers marked the fourth of the year for Koshey and the second for Pierce.
Bowling Green wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just 21 seconds into the contest when Adam Berkle put one past UAH goaltender Carmine Guerriero. The visitors then added three more goals in the middle frame as Brent Tate scored at 3:58, Dan DeSalvo struck at 9:07, and Rusty Hafner tallied at 13:25.
The contest was a relatively disciplined affair with BGSU whistled for four penalties and UAH just three, but neither team was able to convert on the power play including a golden opportunity for the Chargers when they had 45 seconds of 5-on-3 time after BGSU had taken a penalty at the end of the first period and committed another infraction at 1:15 of the second.
Tommy Burke stopped 26 shots in earning the victory in goal for the Falcons, while Guerriero recorded 22 saves in the loss.
The Chargers will return to action on Friday when they open a two-game set at Notre Dame. Friday's contest will be aired nationally on NBC Sports Network with the opening faceoff slated for 6:35 p.m. CST.
