HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Alabama in Huntsville Hockey team saw their 2013 WCHA home-opener spoiled on Friday night, as the Chargers fell 6-1 to rival Bemidji State at the Von Braun Center.
UAH (0-3-0) scored the opening goal of the night at 15:49 in the first period when senior Alex Allan scored his first goal of the season. Allan, who received a beautiful feed from Doug Reid, found the puck just beyond the crease and found the back of the net to give the fans something to cheer about early on.
Bemidji State (1-3-1) would answer just over a minute later when Markus Gerbrandt scored the first goal of his hat trick. Thirty-eight seconds later, Brendan Harms added another goal for the Beavers, which proved to be the game-winner. A Cory Ward goal from Bemidji State would be all that would highlight the second period, as the visitors would carry a 3-1 lead into the third period.
After the Beavers scored two goals in the first three minutes of the third period, Stephen McKenna looked to have scored his first goal of his young career. McKenna's goal would be reviewed and was determined to have gone in after the net was dislodged, therefore disallowing the goal.
BSU would add a power-play goal at 13:32, the final score of the night.
Matt Larose (0-2-0) suffered his second defeat of the season, but tallied 20 saves on the night. Andrew Walsh (1-3-1) picked up his first victory racking up 22 saves.
The two teams will do battle again tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. back at the Von Braun Center.
