NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Matt Salhany recorded his team-best eighth point of the season, but the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team fell 7-1 on Friday night to the 15th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Compton Family Ice Arena.
UAH (1-22-0) spotted Notre Dame (11-8-1) six goals before Salhany scored his third of the season in the third period. Salhany redirected the puck from Graeme Strukoff, who notched his second assist of the year.
Freshman Brent Fletcher picked up the secondary assist on the goal, which gives him three points on the season, all coming on the pass. The trio did a good job to create some congestion in front of goal and allow the ND defense to scatter.
Notre Dame scored three goals in the first period and three goals in the second period, including the first score of the game just 38 seconds into the action. UND added their seventh goal of the game at 6:25 of the third period, less than three minutes after UAH scored its lone goal of the game.
Matt Larose remains winless on the season, dropping his record to 0-12-0. Larose finished with 30 saves on the night. Chad Kunatar gets the win for ND, finishing with 16 saves.
Bryan Rust tallied Notre Dame's first hat trick of the season, scoring a goal in every period. Robbie Russo, Sam Herr, T.J. Tynan and Vince Hinostroza all scored for the Irish.
The game was broadcast on NBC Sports Network, which marks the first time in program history that UAH has appeared on national television for a regular season game.
The two teams will play again tomorrow night for the third time this season. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. ET.
