BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. - The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team began the 2013-14 season in exhibition style, defeating Wilfrid Laurier University 7-1 on Saturday night (Oct. 5). Playing in front of 2,299 Falcon hockey faithful at the BGSU Ice Arena, the Falcons saw seven different players all score BGSU goals, while all three goaltenders saw action throughout the night.

The Falcons scored goals at least twice in every period, outshooting the Golden Hawks 46-9 in a dominant offensive showcase. Sophomore Tommy Burke played in the net the entire first period, stopping all three of shots he faced. Freshman Tomas Sholl played a total of 30:34 minutes, turning away 4-of-5 shots, while senior goaltender Scott Zacharias saved the one shot he faced.

Bowling Green started scoring early and often, as senior Camden Wojtala scored the first goal of the game only 36 seconds into the first period. Senior Bryce Williamson was credited with the assist as he found Wojtala waiting near the front of the crease to find the back of the net.

The Falcons kept the pressure on Wilfrid Laurier, as the Orange and Brown scored once again with 10:44 remaining in the first frame. Bowling Green worked the puck around in their attacking zone before eventually finding sophomore Ben Murphy for the power-play tally, handing the Falcons a 2-0 advantage mid-way through the first period.

Bowling Green went 1-for-9 on the power play, while WIlfrid Laurier finished scoreless, going 0-for-4 on the night.

The Orange and Brown looked to be resilient in the second frame, scoring quickly once again. This time, Bryce Williams found the net, scoring just 1:22 into the period. Williamson was responsible for 3 points of the Falcons' first three goals (two assists and one goal).

Newcomers Matt Pohlkamp and Pierre-Luc Mercier also scored for Bowing Green, marking their first goals of the new season. The three goals was the Falcons' biggest scoring output in a period of the night, outshooting Wilfrid Laurier 16-2 in the frame.

Leading 5-0, the Golden Hawks broke the shutout at the 10:17 mark. Sophomore Greg Lamoureux broke free of the Falcons' defesnsemen and beat Sholl for their only goal of the night, climbing within 5-1.

However, the Orange and Brown struck back. While Wilfrid Laurier held a one-man advantage, junior Ryan Carpenter, who led the Falcons last year with 33 points, found a hole within the Golden Hawks and raced towards their defending zone. Carpenter was able to skate around five 'Hawks and spun around for a backhanded goal. The short-handed goal gave the Falcons' a 6-1 lead.

Junior forward Dan DeSalvo put an exclamation point on the night, scoring the game's final goal, giving Bowling Green a 7-1 victory.

The Falcons will have their season-opener next weekend, as they travel to Schenectady, N.Y. to take on Union College (Oct. 11-12), with the puck set to drop at 7:30 p.m. in both affairs. Bowling Green will return back home for their regular-season opener against Ohio State University on Oct. 15 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
