South Bend, Ind.- Lake Superior State (11-12-1) fell to their former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (14-8-1), by a score of 4-2 in the Saturday night game at Compton Family Ice Arena. The Lakers received goals from freshmen Alex Globke (9-14--23) and Matt Johnson (4-1--5). However, Notre Dame proved to be too much as they rode the performances of Steven Fogarty (two goals), Peter Schneider (goal and assist) and the second goal of the weekend by Mario Lucia.
LSSU jumped out to an early lead when Globke tallied his ninth goal of the season on assists from senior Dan Radke (3-12--15) and freshman Garret Clemment (3-10--13). The Lakers took that one goal lead into the second period as senior Kevin Murdock (4-7-0) turned away all 14 shots he faced in the period.
The Laker lead remained until a pair of goals by Irish forward Steven Fogarty 24 seconds apart gave Notre Dame a lead that they would not relinquish. The Irish put up another goal on the scoreboard before the end of the second period after a penalty against Chris Ciotti (1-8--9) opened the door for Mario Lucia's second goal of the weekend. Murdock once again reached double-digit saves in the second period as he turned away 12 of the 15 shots he faced.
Matt Johnson delivered the final goal for the Lakers early in the third period from Garret Clemment's second assist of the game and third on the weekend, as well as, Stephen Perfetto (3-13--16) picking up his second assist of the weekend. However, that's all the Lakers could muster against the senior net-minder Steven Summeryhays (12-7-1) who faced only 19 shots on the evening. Kevin Murdock faced over 41 shots, surpassing the 40-save mark for the second straight game.
The Lakers are on the road again next week as the travel to Western Collegiate Hockey Association member Bowling Green (Jan. 24 & 25).
