MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University kicked off the 2013-14 season with 3-1 win over the U.S. National Development Under-18 team in an exhibition game from the Berry Events Center on Saturday (Oct. 5) night. Sophomore forward Cohen Adair had a goal and an assist and redshirt freshman goaltender Mathias Dahlstrom had 22 saves in 40 minutes of play to lead the Wildcats back from a 1-0 deficit.
After a scoreless first period, Darin Larkin scored 53 seconds into the second for USNDT's only goal of the night. He took a pass from Jack Glover and carried it around the NMU net before firing it past Dahlstrom.
Senior captain CJ Ludwig tied up the game 4:30 into the second with a blast from just inside the circle. Junior forward Ryan Daugherty assisted on the tally.
Senior forward Erik Higby scored the game-winner with 1:49 left in the second period. Adair fed a cross-ice pass to Higby for the assist.
Adair made it a two-goal game (3-1) late in the third period (18:14) with a power-play tally from freshman forward Shane Sooth.
Dahlstrom stopped 22 shots in the start, including 13 in the second period. Sophomore Michael Doan replaced him for the third and finished with seven saves.
The 'Cats were outshot 30-15. NMU was 1-for-4 on the power play while USNDT was 0-for-3.
Edwin Minney had 12 saves for the USNDT.
NMU wraps up the exhibition season on Sunday (Oct. 6) with a 2:07 p.m. game against Laurentian University at the Berry Events Center. Laurentian lost 3-2 at Michigan Tech on Saturday.
