USAFA, Colo. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-7-1) hockey team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night by a score of 4-2 over Air Force (2-6-0) in the series opener at Cadet Ice Arena.

The first 10 minutes of play was tightly contested between the Chargers and Falcons, until Air Force's Max Hartner scored at the 13:42 mark to put his team in front 1-0 in the first.

The Chargers would rebound late in the first frame with a power-play goal by freshman Cody Champagne, the first of his career, with 1:43 remaining in the first. Fellow freshman Brennan Saulnier was credited with his second assist of the season.

Sophomore goalie Carmine Guerriero continued his strong play in the 2014-15 season, stopping a total of nine shots in the first period.

Junior Frank Misuraca put UAH ahead 2-1 at 10:52 in the second for his team-leading third goal of the season, assisted by Matt Salhany and Alex Carpenter. The 2-1 UAH lead would hold heading into the second intermission.

Cole Gunner tied the game for Air Force midway through the second period at the 10:09 mark, his third score of the season.

The Falcons' lead would last just under eight minutes, before Huntsville native Josh Kesnter scored his second career goal to put the Chargers on top by a score of 3-2. Saulnier was credited with his second assist of the game on Kestner's goal, a single-game high for the freshman.

Junior Jack Prince padded the Chargers lead with an empty-net goal in the final minute of play to seal the Chargers win and bring the game to its final score of 4-2.

Guerriero notched his first win of the season following a 24-save performance on Friday night. The sophomore has allowed just three goals in his past two starts.

The Chargers managed 24 shots on goal in the series opener at Air Force, with Max McHugh, Chad Brears and Saulnier leading the squad with three shots apiece.

UAH and Air Force will play the series finale on Saturday night at Cadet Ice Arena. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. CDT for the non-conference tilt.
