COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (0-1) hockey team fell to Colorado College (1-0) in the 2014-15 season opener by a final score of 3-2 on Friday night at Broadmoor World Arena.
Colorado College's offense got the best of UAH at the outset of the game, as the Tigers went up 1-0 early on a power play goal in the first period by Aaron Harstad at the 3:45 mark. CC continued to push its offense in the first half of the first period, with Teemu Kivihalme scoring the Tigers' second goal of the game at 9:59.
Despite two early goals, sophomore goalkeeper Carmine Guerriero held strong in the crease, notching 11 saves in the first period to keep the game within the Chargers' reach.
The Chargers and Tigers were scoreless in the first 12 minutes of the second period, until sophomore Brent Fletcher netted UAH's first goal of the season on a power play at the 12:11 mark. Chad Brears and Brandon Parker were credited with assists on the score.
The UAH offense continued to rally in the latter part of the second as senior Jeff Vanderlugt, who scored five goals a year ago, notched the game-tying goal with 1:59 remaining in the period. Junior Alex Carpenter recorded an assist on the goal, his first collegiate assist with UAH.
UAH and Colorado College took the tie halfway through the third period with both teams keeping steady on the defensive end. However, CC's Cody Bradley scored the definitive goal at the 12:57 mark on an assist by Peter Maric to make it a 3-2 final score.
The Chargers penalty kill unit played well throughout Friday night. UAH defended the power play six times in the opener, allowing just one goal as a unit. Sophomore Brandon Carlson anchored the defense with a team-high four blocks, with senior Ben Reinhardt just behind at three.
Overall in goal, Guerriero finished with 37 saves for the Chargers. Guerriero has registered 30 saves or more in four straight contests dating back to the Feb. 15 matchup last season at Minnesota State.
UAH and Colorado College will play again tomorrow night at 8:07 p.m. CDT for the second game of the series.
