HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-8-2, 0-5-0 WCHA) hockey team fell on Friday night to Lake Superior State (2-9-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) in the series opener at Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center by a final score of 1-0.

Sophomore goalie Carmine Guerriero was spectacular again making his sixth start of the 2014-15 campaign. Guerriero totaled 33 saves, including a game-high 15 in the second period, despite taking the loss on Friday.

The Chargers came out determined on offense at the outset, putting up 11 shots on goal compared to the Lakers' nine in the first period. However, both teams would skate to a scoreless tie heading into the first intermission.

Freshman Brennan Saulnier was called for a five-minute major for boarding at 11:02 in the second period, giving LSSU the power-play advantage. The Lakers' Bryce Schmitt gave Lake Superior State the go-ahead goal on the power play at 12:32, assisted by James Roll and Jason Bird. Despite allowing the lone goal on the power play, UAH killed four out of the five power play opportunities by the Lakers.

Both UAH and LSSU posted nine shots on goal in the third period, but the final 20 minutes would be scoreless allowing the Lakers to win the opening game of this two-game WCHA series, 1-0.

Junior Chad Brears led the Chargers with five shots on goal, followed by UAH points leader Brandon Carlson with four shots on target. Six different UAH players had two shots on goal.

The Chargers and Lakers will wrap up the series on Saturday at Propst Arena at the VBC, and UAH will be giving away camo rally towels to the first 500 fans in attendance. Admission is free to veterans and active military personnel for tomorrow's contest as part of Military Appreciation Weekend. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
