HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team picked up its first conference win of the season, earning a series split with visiting Lake Superior State with a 5-2 triumph. The win pushes the Chargers to 2-8-2 (1-5-0 WCHA), while LSSU slips to 2-10-0 (2-5-0 WCHA).

The Chargers skated to a 2-0 lead Saturday night as Cody Marooney scored his first of the season with a shorthanded marker at 5:09 of the first, and Richard Buri's followed that with his first career score at 5:22 in middle frame. Both goals were unassisted.

Answering the two UAH strikes, Chris Ciotti scored for the Lakers at 12:16 and Garrett Clemment tied the contest at 16:37, but with time running down on the second period, Max McHugh -- assisted by Chad Brears and Brandon Parker -- scored on the power play to put the Chargers in front 3-2 at the end of 40 minutes.

UAH then earned its second power play goal of the night at 8:10 of the third when Jeff Vanderlugt scored his second of the season, and the lead would expand to a three-goal advantage when Vanderlugt set up Jack Prince's power play tally at 15:14 of the final period.

Sophomore goalie Carmine Guerriero kept the Lakers in check on Saturday night, posting 23 saves in his second win of the season. Guerriero made his first back-to-back start of the 2014-15 campaign in the win over the Lakers.

The Chargers were on the winning side of the shots on goal race, 30-25. Prince led UAH with six shots on goal, followed by Marooney with four. Four different Chargers registered three shots on goal.

UAH will return to action next weekend when the team travels to Ferris State for a weekend pair. Both Friday and Saturday night's games are slated for 6:07 p.m. CST starts.
