SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Lake Superior State men's ice hockey defeated Bemidji State Saturday night during the second game of their Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series. The Lakers (6-19-1, 5-13-0 WCHA) completed the sweep over the Beavers (7-12-3, 5-8-3 WCHA) giving them their first sweep of the season and head coach Damon Whitten's first at the helm.

The Lakers jumped out to an early two goal lead in the first period over the Beavers thanks to Luke Sandler(3-1--4), who scored a pair of goals on the evening, and Stephen Perfetto (6-3--9). Sandler's goal, 5:10 into the opening whistle, came on a deflected shot by Chris Ciotti(4-5--9) after he received the pass from the Lakers' leading scorer Bryce Schmitt (6-7--13), appearing in his 100th game as a Laker.

Eric Drapluk earned his first assist of the night on Perfetto's tally, while Gus Correale (1-3--4)was also credited with the assist.

The Lakers took to the locker room ahead 2-0 after the first period while trailing in the shot totals 8-7.

Late in the second period Alex Globke (4-5--9), Friday evening's hero, scored his second goal of the weekend off of a tipped shot by Drapluk. For Drapluk it was his second assist of the evening.

The Lakers got their final goal 6:14 into the third period when Luke Sandler added his second of the evening, a power-play marker, giving him his first multi-point game as a Laker. Freshmen defenders James Roll (0-9--9) and Ryan Renz (0-3--3) got the assists.

Gordon Defiel made the start once again and made 32 saves on the Beavers 34 shots on goal. The freshman net minder stood tall once again this weekend making big saves.

Defiel's two blemishes on the night came late in the third period. The first was an even strength goal by Markus Gerbrahndt and the second goal was with two seconds remaining when Cory Ward scored with an extra attacker.

The Lakers travel to No. 7 Bowling Green next weekend to face the Falcons for two games before entering a bye week. The next home series for the Lakers is Feb. 13-14 when they host the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville.
