ESTERO, Fla.- Lake Superior State men's ice hockey team defeated Cornell University in their first matchup of the Florida College Hockey Classic in a shootout. The teams skated through 65 minutes without a tally before a shootout was needed to determine who advances to the championship round in the first round of the Florida College Hockey Classic. Lake Superior State (3-17-1, 3-11-1 WCHA) will now face Notre Dame, whom the Lakers fell victim to in a weekend sweep Oct. 17-18.

The meeting in the tournament marked the 24th anniversary of the first time the two teams met. Lake Superior won the first match up 3-2 in the Syracuse Invitational Dec. 28, 1990.

The Lakers and Big Red skated through the first three periods and a five minute overtime scoreless. Cornell led 9-5 in shots after the first period and 20-14 after the second period. The final shot tally was 39-24 in favor of Cornell.

In the shootout, Cornell missed their first two attempts and senior Stephen Perfetto (5-3--8) netted the go ahead goal with each team still having a shooter left. Big Red forward Christian Hilbrich tied up the tally with a quick flip of the wrists during the third round. After Bryce Schmitt (6-6--12) was turned away on the potential game-winner, John McCarron shot wide on Cornell's fourth attempt. That opened the door for Chris Ciotti (4-3--7) to lift the Lakers to the championship game.

Freshman net minder Gordon Defiel (3-15-1) stopped all 39 shots by the Big Red and was helped by three shots that rang off the pipes. Defiel got some more love in the shootout on Cornell's second shot, which also rang off of a post. The shutout is the second of Defiel's freshman campaign.

The Lakers will faceoff for the third time with Notre Dame on Monday evening for the championship matchup of the Florida College Hockey Classic. The game will be played at 7:35 pm ET and can be heard on 99.5 YES FM.
