Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally fourth-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the 2014-15 campaign as St. Lawrence salvaged a weekend split with the Bulldogs by taking a 2-0 win on Saturday (Oct. 18) night in Canton, N.Y.

The host Saints scored an early goal for the second-straight night in the opening period, but unlike Friday's thrilling come-from-behind overtime triumph, the Bulldogs could not rally back in Saturday's weekend series finale.

With the loss, FSU fell to 2-1 overall this season while St. Lawrence improved to 2-2 on the year.

The Saints' Mitch Eden scored the initial goal of the night off a feed from Drew Smolcynski and Tommy Thompson only 4:30 into the contest. It marked the second night in a row in which the hosts produced the opening goal less than five minutes into the first stanza.

The 1-0 lead stood up until the final period as neither team could find the back of the net the reminder of the first or the entire second period.

In the third frame, the Saints pushed their lead to two goals on Patrick Doherty's marker 12:08 into the period. It was assisted by Justin Bruckel.

The score proved pivotal as the Bulldogs fought back and made a charge in the final period, but could not find a way to put a goal on the board.

Overall, the Bulldogs were outshot 37-33 for the evening, but had 15 chances in the third period to 14 for the Saints.

Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play as FSU finished without a goal in six tries and the Saints were held scoreless in four opportunities with the man advantage.

FSU was called for four penalties totaling 11 minutes with SLU tabbed six times for 12 minutes in the box.

Bulldog senior goaltender CJ Motte made 35 saves for Ferris State in the losing effort as he dropped to 2-1 overall this year. Meanwhile, St. Lawrence's Kyle Hayton picked up the win to move to 2-2 this season by stopping 33 Bulldog shots.

The Bulldogs return home to open Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action against Michigan Tech on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25, in Big Rapids. Tickets for next weekend's home series are currently on sale and going fast with large crowds expected as FSU opens defense on its league title.
