DULUTH, Minn. - 12th-rated Minnesota State fought off a rally from 20th-rated Minnesota Duluth to claim a 5-4 overtime win in nonconference action Friday in Duluth.

The Mavericks took a 2-0 first period lead on goals by freshman forward C.J. Franklin and sophomore forward Jordan Nelson. The first tally, which was scored at 16:55, came after senior forward Matt Leitner took control of the puck along the side boards and found the streaking Franklin in the high slot, who then snapped the puck past UMD netminder Matt McNeeley on the stickside. The goal is the first career goal for Franklin. Nelson got his first goal of the season on his shot from the slot at 16:55 after taking a pass from sophomore defenseman Sean Flanagan.

UMD's Dominic Toninato made it 2-1 with a shorthanded marker at 7:31 of the second, but a power play goal on Teddy Blueger's backhander at 8:24 and another by freshman Brad McClure with the Mavericks on the power play at 10:57 made it a 4-1 Minnesota State lead. The Bulldogs closed the gap when Carson Soucy connected on the power play at 14:57 and Adam Kause tallied at 16:58. The score at the end of two periods of play stood 4-3.

UMD's Karson Kuhlman deflected a shot past Minnesota State junior netminder Stephon Williams at 16:10 to send the game into overtime.

With the Mavericks on the power play and a shot from Zach Palmquist from the point, freshman Zeb Knutson and sophomore Teddy Blueger both batted at the puck in front of the UMD at 2:23 in the extra session and Knutson was officially credited with the game-winning goal.

Junior netminder Stephon Williams finished with 34 saves to get the win.

Minnesota State, which stands 2-1-0 overall with tonight's win, went one-for-four in power play chances. UNO were unsuccessful in six man-advantage opportunities.

The two teams square-off again Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
