ANCHORAGE - The Alabama Huntsville Chargers win the opener, 2-1 vs. the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Sullivan Arena in front of 1,575 fans.
In the WCHA standings, the Seawolves (9-13-3, 6-12-2 WCHA) remain tied for No. 8 with in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks, while the Chargers (7-16-3, 4-12-3 WCHA) gain some ground on the Alaska schools with 11 points. The Chargers also picked up their first win against UAA in Anchorage - the Seawolves are 13-1-0 against UAH at the Sullivan.
After trailing for most of the game, the Seawolves forged a 1-1 tie halfway through the third stanza, but gave up the winning goal with under five minutes to play for their third straight loss. Meanwhile, the Chargers broke a two-game winless streak.
Scoring in the opening three minutes of play was UAH's freshman Adam Wilcox at 3:04 - his fourth of the season - with a rebound tally. Assisting on the play were fellow freshmen Tyler Poulsen and Jetlan Houcher.
After a scoreless second period, freshman Wyatt Ege knotted the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 9:53 of the third period. Ege collected his fourth of the season and second man-advantage goal, shooting through traffic from the blueline. Sophomores Tad Kozun and Matt Anholt were credited with the helpers.
With 4:19 remaining in the game, junior Matt Salhany gets credited with a goal, returning the lead to the Chargers. An inadvertent pass from a Seawolf defender ended up bouncing off sophomore Olivier Mantha's skate and in the net.
UAA pulled Mantha for the extra attacker with 40 seconds left in the game, but were unable to capitalize. Mantha made 22 stops in the loss and drops to 8-12-3, while Matt Larose turned aside 29 shots.
The team rematch tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. AST. Fans can purchase tickets at the door for just $10 each.
