HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team skated a 3-3 tie with visiting Alaska Anchorage on Friday night in the opening game of the WCHA series at the Von Braun Center. UAH is now 1-1-1 (0-0-1 WCHA), while UAA stands at 3-1-1 (0-0-1 WCHA).
The UAH points leader for the evening was sophomore defenseman Brandon Parker, who totaled two points from assists on a pair of goals Friday night. Josh Kestner, Cody Marooney and Brennan Saulnier chipped in one goal each for UAH.
Alaska Anchorage held the advantage early, with Jeremiah Luedtke breaking the scoreless tie at 12:12 of the first on a power play before Matt Anholt added the Seawolves second goal of the game to take a 2-0 lead at 16:38 of the opening frame.
It wouldn't take long into the second period for the Chargers to get on the board and would score three goals within the first eight minutes of the stanza. Marooney put UAH on the board first at 2:08 of the second as he fired a wrist shot from the red dot past UAA's Mantha to cut the lead to 2-1. Parker notched his first assist of the night on Marooney's marker.
Saulnier was able to tie the game at 2-2 with his team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 6:38 mark, thanks to helpers from Max McHugh and Parker, before Huntsville native Kestner made it a 3-2 Chargers lead at 7:35 of the second. Both Richard Buri and Hans Gorowsky were credited with assists on the Kestner score.
The Seawolves' Blake Tatchell added the final goal of the contest at 2:50 in the third prior to both squads playing a scoreless overtime period. Despite the scoreless overtime, the Chargers managed two shots on goal in the five-minute period.
UAH goalie Carmine Guerriero's record now stands at 1-1-1 on the year, following three goals allowed and a total of 21 saves. Guerriero made seven stops apiece in the first, second and third periods.
The Chargers and Seawolves will wrap up this two-game set tomorrow night at the Von Braun Center. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. for the series finale.
