ANCHORAGE - The Bemidji State Beavers collected the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep with a 5-1 win over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves Saturday evening at the Sullivan Arena in front of 1,768 fans during Military Appreciation Day.

The Seawolves (8-9-3, 5-7-3 WCHA) were handed their 13th straight loss to the Beavers (8-9-4, 7-8-3 WCHA) when BSU furnished three goals in under six minutes during the third stanza after the teams were scoreless in the first two periods. UAA ended the shutout late in the third, but two empty-net goals sealed the win for the Beavers. BSU also won 6-3 on Friday.

The first 40 minutes of play were scoreless and saw the Beavers lead the first 11-8 for shots on goal before UAA picked up the pace in the second for a 13-8 advantage. BSU enjoyed three power plays during the first two frames, while the Seawolves went on one.

Ending the deadlock was sophomore Jordan Heller at 4:54 of the third, beating sophomore netminder Jared D'Amico - who was receiving his second start of the season - over the left shoulder. Dillon Eichstadt and Nate Arentz collected the helpers on the play.

Arentz would add another dagger at the 8:20 mark when he beat a UAA defender to the puck and was 1-on-1 with D'Amico for a shorthanded strike. Just over two minutes later, Gerry Fitzgerald came down the left side of the ice and had an open shot, going over D'Amico's left shoulder once again.

The Seawolves were awarded a power play and decided to pull D'Amico for the extra attacker. Skating 5-on-3, UAA ended the shutout at 16:37 with sophomore forward Tad Kozun's team-high ninth goal of the season. Senior Blake Tatchell got the first helper for his 96th career point, while freshman Wyatt Ege received his third assist of the season and first point since Oct. 31.

Kozun's power-play tally is his fifth on the season, putting him tied for No. 1 in the WCHA overall stats and tied for No. 12 in the nation. It was UAA's first power-play goal in 36 attempts.

Back-to-back empty-net goals at 17:28 and 19:15 by Cory Ward and Heller gave the Beavers the win as they remain undefeated against UAA at the Sullivan Arena, 4-0-2.

D'Amico (1-1-0) put up 23 saves in the loss, while netminder Michael Bitzer furnished his fourth win of the season with 28 saves. UAA out shot BSU, 29-28.

The loss puts UAA tied for No. 8 in the conference with Alaska Fairbanks, each with 12 points.

The Seawolves - who are looking for their 500th program win - take off for the Lower 48 when they play back-to-back road series at Lake Superior State, Jan. 16-17 and Bowling Green, Jan. 21-22.
