HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team lost to Bemidji State by a final score of 4-1 on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in the WCHA series finale. The Chargers dip to 3-8-1 (2-7-1 WCHA), while the Beavers improve to 4-6-3 (3-5-2 WCHA).
UAH and Bemidji State entered into a defensive struggle in the opening frame as both teams would go scoreless through the initial 20 minutes of play. Junior Carmine Guerriero anchored the Chargers defense with a game-best 12 saves in the first, while BSU goalie Reid Mimmack totaled five stops in the frame.
However, after another scoreless 16 minutes into the second period, the Beavers were able to break through with a goal by Cory Wade at 16:06 of the stanza which would be the only goal of the frame to give BSU a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
The Blue and White bounced back with a goal by Chad Brears at 7:04 as he flipped in a pass in front of the goal from Max McHugh, who played the puck in behind the net. Along with McHugh, Saulnier picked up an assist on the tally.
The Beavers would strike back just 15 seconds later at 7:19 with a marker by Graeme McCormack to take the lead, before Justin Baudry made it a 3-1 BSU advantage at 9:51 of the third period. Charlie O'Connor scored the final goal of the game - an empty-netter - at 19:04 to bring the game to its 4-1 final.
Guerriero's record falls to 2-5-1 in goal, despite accruing 22 saves in 58:02 in goal.
The Chargers recorded a total of 18 shots on goal during the contest, with freshman Kurt Gosselin leading the way with three shots on target. Four different Chargers had two shots on goal each in the loss.
UAH looks ahead to another home series next weekend, when Northern Michigan visits the VBC on Friday and Saturday night for a WCHA series. Puck drops at 7 p.m. both nights.
