HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team dropped the series opener to NCHC affiliate Colorado College on Friday night by a final score of 5-2 at the Von Braun Center. UAH dips to 3-12-2, while CC improves to 4-15-0.
The Chargers and Tigers opened Friday's contest scoreless through the opening half of the first period, before Colorado College's Hunter Fejes sent in the first goal of the night at 11:00 for a 1-0 CC lead.
However, a shorthanded, unassisted tally by freshman Adam Wilcox - his second of the year - evened the game at 1-1 at 12:34 of the frame on a breakaway after causing a turnover at center ice. The 1-1 tie would hold heading into first intermission.
The majority of the second period was a defensive struggle between the two squads, but Colorado College took a two-goal advantage at the end of the stanza with goals by Matt Hansen at 18:14 and Fejes at 18:58.
The Tigers went on to post an additional two goals in the third frame by Luc Gerdes at 3:12 and Sam Rothstein at 5:13, before senior Chad Brears scored his seventh of the season at 16:44 on a power play - caused by a 5:00 major cross-checking penalty and game disqualification issued to Trey Bradley - to bring the game to its final score of 5-2. Sophomores Max McHugh and Brennan Saulnier assisted Brears' tally.
Junior Carmine Guerriero started in net for the Chargers, taking the loss to drop his season record to 2-8-2. Guerriero made a total of 27 saves in the contest with a game-high 15 stops in the first period.
The Chargers totaled 34 shots on goal total in the game, with senior Jack Prince leading the way with five shots on target. Hans Gorowsky, Brears and McHugh each had four shots in the game as well.
UAH and CC will matchup Saturday night to cap off the 2015 calendar year's slate and the two-game series. Puck drops at 7 p.m. at the VBC.
