BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) - Locked in a scoreless tie to open the third period, the Bemidji State University men's ice hockey team got goals from Phillip Marinaccio and Gerry Fitzgerald in final 15 minutes to take the game 2-0 and complete the nonconference series sweep of Arizona State University, Saturday at Sanford Center.
The victory stands as BSU's fourth straight, while the Beavers are unbeaten in six games (5-0-1) to open the calendar year.
Michael Bitzer turned aside all 18 ASU shots to post his second consecutive shutout and the eighth of his career. Now 6-9-3 on the year, he is unbeaten in his last five appearances (4-0-1) and finished the weekend stopping all 25 shots he faced.
Bemidji State controlled the first period, out shooting the Sun Devils 17-6, but finished the period without anything to show for it and the teams skated into the first intermission locked in a 0-0 tie.
The BSU penalty-kill unit got a workout in the second period. The Beavers were whistled for three penalties during the frame but held ASU without a goal and Bemidji State outshot the Sun Devils 14-4, but were again unable to solve the ASU goaltender Robert Levin and the teams would open the third period tied, 0-0.
Five minutes and 35 seconds into the third, The Beavers got the break they needed, Nate Arentz, nocked the puck off the stick of an ASU defender and right into Marinaccio's path. The junior forward picked up the puck and fired it though traffic for his first goal of the season.
Just 2:58 later, G. Fitzgerald picked off a Sun Devil pass and logged his team-leading 12th tally of 2015-16 to make it 2-0. The goal also extended his point streak to six games.
The BSU penalty-kill unit continued its dominance at home, holding the Sun Devils without a goal on five power-play opportunities.
The Beavers, now 10-9-4 overall, return their focus to Western Collegiate Hockey Association play Jan. 22-23 when they welcome Ferris State University to Sanford center for a two-game series. Faceoff times are set for 7:37 p.m. Friday and 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
