Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State got a pair of shorthanded goals and an assist from senior forward Bryce Gervais as the #18th-rated Mavericks skated to a 5-1 win over #19 Bowling Green in home Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday in Mankato.

Gervais now stands as the owner of the school record with his nine career shorthanded tallies moving ahead of Zach Harrison who scored seven shorthanded goals during the course of his four years with the Mavericks from 2006-10.

Minnesota State never trailed in the game and got things going early when junior forward Michael Huntebrinker, camped in front of the BGSU net, took a pass from Max Coatta after Daniel Brickley's shot from the point had been stopped by netminder Chris Nell and deposited it into the net at 15:31 of the first to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The goal by Huntebrinker, his seventh of the year, held up as the only scoring of the opening period.

The Mavericks struck twice in the second period in taking a 3-0 lead. Coatta deflected Carter Foguth's shot past Nell for his fifth goal of the year at 9:56 and then with Minnesota State on the power play, C.J. Franklin extended his point-scoring streak to five games after he scored at 12:21.

BGSU cut the deficit to two goals at 5:47 on an unassisted shorthanded goal by John Schilling at 5:47, setting the stage for Gervais' record-breaking effort. The Battleford, Sask., native took a feed from Teddy Blueger and went five-hole on Nell at 12:36 and the next shift, with the Mavericks still a man in the penalty box, scored again at 13:58. The goals are the ninth and tenth goals of the season for Gervais. Blueger finished the game with two assists and Coatta had a goal and an assist.

The Mavericks finished the game with a one-for-seven performance with the man advantage. The Falcons were zero-for-five on the power play in the game.

Senior Cole Huggins, who stopped 19 shots, owns a 7-7-0 record with this afternoon's decision. The Mavericks outshot the Falcons by a 21-19 margin in the game.

Minnesota State stands 15-9-5 overall with the win and is 13-3-5 in WCHA action. Bowling Green falls to 15-9-5 overall, 11-5-5 WCHA.
