BEMIDJI, Minn. - Charlie O'Connor broke a 2-2 tie with 22 seconds left in regulation as the Bemidji State University men's hockey team defeated No. 2/3 University of Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, in the Beavers' 2015-16 opener Saturday at Sanford Center.

After a scoreless first period during which featured BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer, the Beavers were outshot 12-5. But Bemidji State bounced back in the second, aided by a pair of five-minute majors, to edge UMD 13-6 in shot during the frame and went to the locker room locked in a 1-1 tie.

BSU came up dry in the final 2:12 of the first major penalty and looked to get the break they needed at the 15:15 mark of the period when Kyle Osterberg was whistled for a major charging call, setting BSU up with a second five-minute advantage. But just 19 seconds into the power-play, Tony Cameranesi stole a pass between BSU defenders and raced down the ice before finding Andy Welinski in the crease for a short-handed goal.

BSU counterpunched to knot the score at 1-1 at the 17:25 mark when John Parker took passes from Graeme McCormack and Phillip Marinaccio to score on the power play.

Five minutes and 28 seconds into the third period, Gerry Fitzgerald was on the back door to pot his first goal of the season and give BSU its first lead of the season, 2-1, but the Bulldogs bounced back to even the score 18 seconds later on an Austin Young tally.

BSU built momentum through the remainder of the period, using a late high sticking penalty with just over five minute to play to make a final run at the win in regulation and O'Connor finished the rush with a back door shot that was clipped by the stick of UMD netminder Kasmir Kaskisuo and trickled across the goal line to seal the victory.

Bitzer finished the night making saves on 28-of-30 shots he faces to gain his first victory of the 2015-16 season. In addition, the Beavers blocked 13 shots in front of the BSU net.

The victory was the third straight over Minnesota Duluth as BSU improved to 13-21-1 all-time versus the Bulldogs and 11-7-1 since Oct. 7, 2005.

The Beavers, not 1-0-0 on the season, continue nonconference play at 7:37 p.m. Friday as BSU hosts the University of North Dakota at Sanford Center in the first half of a home-and-home series.
