MARQUETTE, Mich. - Atte Tolvanen made a career-high 46 saves to lead the Northern Michigan hockey team to a scoreless tie with Bemidji State Friday night at the Berry Events Center.
Each team had a quality scoring opportunity in the extra frame. Right off of the face off, Gerry Fitzgerald was able to skate in on net and fire a shot, but his shot rang the pipe.
With just over a minute remaining, Shane Sooth shifted the puck to Dominik Shine between the circles. Michael Bitzer, who made 22 saves of his own, got a piece of Shine's shot and deflected it into the netting to maintain the scoreless deadlock.
Tolvanen made the majority of his saves in the first two periods, turning aside 22 in the second alone. In the dying minutes of that period, he pounced on a rebound with a Beaver crashing the crease to keep Bemidji State from pulling ahead.
With the tie, the Wildcats move to 2-2-3 (1-1-1 WCHA). They return to action tomorrow when they take on the Beavers at 7:07 p.m.
