MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan hockey team downed the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 team, 4-0, in its season-opening exhibition game Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Brock Maschmeyer struck on a man advantage. Maschmeyer took a pass from Shane Sooth and snapped it past Jake Oettinger.

Northern Michigan wrapped up the scoring at 6:41 in the third period when Robbie Payne streaked down the wing and sent a seeing-eye pass to Sami Salminen in front for a tap-in score.
