BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad returned home and earned its second consecutive victory, this time over the University of Alaska Nanooks at Ewigleben Ice Arena by a 3-1 score in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Friday (Nov. 10) night inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Junior defenseman Ryker Killins earned two assists following up on his overtime winning goal at Michigan a week prior while freshman forward Coale Norris scored the game-winning goal at 11:37 of the second period.
The Bulldogs struck first at 4:04 of the opening period when sophomore defenseman Cameron Clarke scored his first of the year on the power play. Clarke had it at the right point and drilled a slap shot past UAF goaltender Anton Martinsson for a 1-0 FSU lead. Freshman forward Lucas Finner earned his fourth assist of the year on the goal with sophomore defenseman Joe Rutkowski picking up his second.
Alaska returned fire on the power play at 8:25 of the first when James LaDouce scored from Steven Jandric and Justin Woods for a 1-1 tie headed into the second period.
FSU's Norris scored in his second consecutive game for his third goal of the year, and second game-winner, at 11:37 of the second period to give FSU a 2-1 lead. Norris was left loose in between the circles and shot low to the blocker side of Martinsson with Killins (3) and sophomore forward Taylor Fernandez (4) gaining assists on the goal.
The Nanooks had a chance to tie it at 2-2 with a penalty shot, but Ferris State sophomore goaltender Justin Kapelmaster stopped Alaska's Kyle Marino to preserve the lead.
Ferris State senior forward Mitch Maloney finished the scoring at 19:00 of the third on an empty net goal, for his team-best sixth goal of the year from Killins (4) and a 3-1 final.
Kapelmaster earned his second-straight win on 22 saves for Ferris State, while Martinsson made 33 stops in the loss for Alaska.
The Bulldogs went 2-of-8 on the power play while Alaska scored on its first attempt but was held scoreless on their last nine. Both teams marched to the penalty box, as Ferris State took 24 penalty minutes, with Alaska earning 28.
Ferris State earns three points in the WCHA standings and improved to 4-6-1 overall on the season and 2-1-0 in November, while moving to 4-0-0 when scoring at least three goals.
The Bulldogs and Nanooks wrap up the series on Saturday (Nov. 11) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena at 7:07 p.m. (ET) on Veterans Appreciation night in Big Rapids.
